Updated: Apr 25, 2021

What if we told you that revolutionary inventions like eye laser surgery, blood transfusion, and three-position traffic lights, were made possible thanks to some of the brightest Black people in history, would you believe us?

Garrett Morgan witnessed a horrible accident between a horse-drawn carriage and an automobile. He made it his mission to invent a traffic light that could control the flow of traffic. His traffic signal was different from others because it had three positions, with one ensuring the safe crossing of pedestrians. Morgan obtained a US Patent in 1923 for his invention.

Dr. Charles Richard Drew pioneering research in preservation of blood plasma during World War II saved thousands of lives. His research transformed blood preservation, and storage techniques which helped perfect blood transfusions.

Lisa Gelobter has helped pave the way for online video through her development of animated Gif’s and Shockwave technology.

Otis Boykin became a man on a mission after his mother died of heart failure. He improved the circuitry in pacemakers which helped improve the lives of patients with heart conditions. He went on to invent chemical air filters, burglar-proof cash register, helped develop IBM computers and more.

Bessie Blount Griffin recognized World War II veterans' need for independence after injuring themselves. She invented a feeding device that enabled amputees to feed themselves.

Patricia Bath became the first African American doctor to receive a medical patent when she invented a laser tool called the Laserphaco Probe in 1981. This tool helped restore the sight of millions of people worldwide, including some who had been blind for more than 30 years.
